Children's & Family Ministry

At Portage United Church of Christ, we believe that children are an important part of the church!  We aim to welcome children just as Jesus did.  For this very reason, Children's and Family Ministry plays a central role at our church.  We invite you to join in on the fun, learning, service, and fellowship of our programs, and we look forward to worshiping with you and your family.  We have many inter-generational services, events, and activities where children and families are always welcome!  See our church calendar or facebook for more information.

For the safety of our children, all volunteers who have contact with them must complete and pass a background check.  Background Check Link

Outreach

Outreach gets a big emphasis in our program. The children’s offering is used to purchase weekend meals for children at Kalamazoo’s Edison Elementary School through the Weekend Foodpacks Program. In addition, the children have the opportunity to participate in special projects such as One Great Hour of Sharing, Love, Inc., UNICEF, Foods Resource Bank, Meals on Wheels, Loaves & Fishes food pantry, and a partnership with Portage Public Schools to provide school supplies and warm winter clothing.

Sunday Morning

Preschool-5th grade:  During the program year, September through mid-June, children attend the opening portion of the worship service, and then are dismissed after the Children's Message to Sunday School in Room 202.  We do not have Sunday school during the summer.

Infants and toddlers:  Infants and toddlers are cared for in our nursery facility by a team of trained workers.  This allows parents to attend the worship service comfortable in the knowledge that their young children are cared for in a consistent and loving environment.

The Sunday School Program

We are exploring the Bible alongside events by using Deep Blue Rotational Sunday School.  Children dive deep into a Bible story or theme for seven weeks.  On a typical Sunday, children learn through listening or reading the Bible creatively, practicing their memory verse, and then engaging in activities for faith formation like drama, games, science, cooking, art, spiritual practices, and missions.  Lastly, they close with worship and prayer, and are sent home with suggestions of continuing learning at home as a family.

Our teachers are parents, grandparents, and friends of children within the church school program, working in teams on a rotating basis.  They are trained in the church school curriculum, have passed a background check, and are eager to assist the children in growing in their Christian faith and to share their love for Jesus with the children.

Second graders are honored each fall with the presentation of a personalized Children's Bible inscribed with a special Bible verse chosen just for them.  The second graders and their families celebrate after the service with a special reception.

Family Adventures

About once a month, we have special events where families share an activity (either a service project or fellowship opportunity).  Sometimes these events will be for a particular age group, all families, or be opened up to the whole congregation.  See our Facebook page for upcoming events!  https://www.facebook.com/Portage-United-Church-of-Christ-736343493123649/
