Deacons

The deacons assist and advise the pastoral staff in the spiritual and liturgical life of the church. They assist with the weekly and seasonal worship service and respond to the needs of our members and guests.

At present there are 12 active deacons and more than 70 individuals who have served as a deacon.  Each one has a unique set of talents to bring to the service of the Lord.  Areas of responsibility include five service teams: Worship Service / Participants, Membership, Congregational Care / Hospitality, Life Presence / Prayer and Healing, and Teaching.

The deacons of PUCC serve the congregation in numerous ways:

Worship Service and Communion

  • Assist with communion
  • Arrange for the pulpit to be filled in the event that the called pastor cannot serve on any particular service
  • Serve individually as Deacon of the Day
  • Run church sound system for services and hearing impaired
  • Record services
  • Maintain and coordinate the banners and paraments schedule
  • Assist with special seasonal services such as Christmas, Easter and other liturgical events including funeral services
  • Collect and record the joys and concerns of members and guests to the worship services


Membership

  • Assist with new member information program, receiving new members
  • Assist with baptism and infant dedications
  • Collect and record member attendance

Congregational Care/Hospitality

  • Provide meals for shut-ins as needed and especially during times of illness, death, or other needs 
  • Calls to members to ensure their needs are being met

Teaching

  • Provide Adult Christian Educational (ACE) material and opportunities of self enrichment through ACE classes, Sacred Conversations, adult retreats and Advent and Lenten soup suppers

Search Committee

  • Appoints one of its members to serve on search committees organized for the purpose of calling a Pastor(s), Director of Children's & Family Ministry, Director of Music Ministry or the Director of Youth Ministry
